What is Microblading?
Microblading is a form of permanent makeup for eyebrows that was founded in the 90’s in Asia. Because microblading is only one technique, it often looks more natural when combined with other effects such as soft shading.
It is known under several names such as eyebrow embroidery, feathering, microstroking etc.
Microblading is basically a group of inline needles that at the hands of the artist are dipped in pigment and “glided” through the skin creating a hair like line.
Is Microblading Eyebrows a cut?
Yes, microblading is a surface cut on the skin usually done in the direction of the hair. Because it’s a cut at the skin’s surface, the pigment doesn’t last as long as other techniques and multiple sessions are often needed. You may be wondering since the method is an actual cut “how many times can you have microblading eyebrows done without scarring the skin?” This is a great question and the answer will vary for different skin types and how deep the artist goes. Careful client consideration is paramount to a successful result for this technique. In general, microblading strokes will blur in oily skin types so other techniques are recommended for optimal results.

EYEBROWS TECHNIQUE?
In short, most anyone can do it. Several permanent makeup artists do offer the microblading eyebrows, and some artists already have had a good permanent makeup foundation others don’t have the design or color experience. Hopefully an experienced permanent makeup artist will be your choice. What’s happened is this: There has been an influx in overnight “microblade only artists” who have taken a 2-day class and start to work on clients. So you could actually do this within 2 days of reading this with no prior training or experience.
The “one-way”microblade artist is left without basic permanent makeup theory, knowledge or experience to handle the vast clientele’s design, skin types and needs.For example, an 80-year-old woman or an oily skin types usually aren’t the appropriate canvas for microblading where as different permanent makeup techniques would be better long term choices for the client.
As a permanent makeup artist of over 20 years, I personally find that repeated microblading will eventually damage the skin. More than a “one-way” approach goes into the artistic thought and technique selection for the permanent eyebrows we offer.
ARE THERE OTHER HAIR STROKE OPTIONS?
Yes, the microblading manual method and the machine method both can create hair strokes that “try” to mimic real hair hence a 3D eyebrow. The reason I say “try” is because a hair stroke done by the microblading method or machine method is actually a tattooed line once healed- not a real hair. Both hair stroke techniques do look more “hair like” in the immediately after photos we see on social media…. These photos get us very excited at the prospect of more brow hair. The immediately after photos can be a too good to be true scenario. We do advise clients to look at healed pictures of microblading, hair strokes and any other permanent makeup procedures to understand the realistic outcome.
The realistic outcome is to understand that microblading or machine hair strokes are fine lines, however, they aren’t hair; they are tattooed lines that will look better for some skin types than others. If you have the right skin type- (smooth, no pores, no wrinkles and you aren’t oily), your result can be nice. If you do have hair that covers the strokes you will have an even better outcome because your hair will actually hide some of the strokes, otherwise,many clients find that the hair strokes just aren’t enough to hide the fact that there isn’t very much hair. The skin space between the hair strokes is often what bothers clients. As a result, artists are now shading in between and over the strokes to meet the desired “fuller brow” look that the todays clients desire.
3D EYEBROWS
In essence, the idea is for the brow to look fuller and have some 3D dimensional value without really seeing tattooed lines per say.
A good artist should be able to decide if you’re a good candidate for any combination of techniques.
For sure, a more natural eyebrow approach shouldn’t be a cookie cutter- one-way pattern.
The most natural permanent eyebrow should incorporate several artistic techniques to create a 3D appearance.
It’s what we call a “blended brow”.
HOW MANY VISITS WILL I NEED?
Most permanent makeup including microblading procedures, typically takes 1-3 appointments to consider the procedure complete. The first appointment is the main appointment. Your follow up appointment is done about 6 weeks after the first session. This allows enough time for the pigment in the epidermis to naturally slough off, and the color to settle and for your skin to heal. During the follow up appointment, the artist evaluates how your permanent makeup looks and can see how your skin has received the pigment and make any design, color adjustments and possibly add another technique for a blended look.
HOW LONG DOES MICROBLADING LAST?
Microblading Eyebrows will last anywhere form 6 months-1 year. Machine hair strokes in my experience do last longer. The main problem with any hair stroke technique in general, is how quick they fade and that they will blur with time. We typically don’t allow clients to return for at least a year after their procedure. This will protect the skin from premature scarring.
There is a delicate a balance in providing beautiful natural results and the longevity of the natural techniques.
